WHAT WE DO

Global Ecotechnics Corporation (GEC) is engaged in the development and application of innovative ecotechnic projects and biospheric design and engineering with an education and information division to further the first two objectives.

Who We Are

The Global Ecotechnics Team designed, engineered and operated the landmark Biosphere 2 project, a laboratory for the study of global ecology,
and its publishing company, Biospheric Press. As well, many of its officers participated in the implementation and operation of numerous projects around the world, from a 1000 acre rainforest enrichment project in Puerto Rico, to a 5000 acre pastoral regeneration project in Australia.

An Overview

Global Ecotechnics Corporation is composed of three divisions:
(1) EcoFrontiers
(2) Biospheric Design
(3) Education and Information.

ECOFRONTIERS DIVISION

Global Ecotechnics owns and oversees the management of Birdwood Downs, a 5000 acre savannah grassland and homestead in NW Australia; Las Casas de la Selva, a 1000 acre rainforest in Puerto Rico; Les Marrionniers, a 15 acre sustainable agriculture farm and conference center in Southern France; and Lundonia House, a beautiful Victorian building located in the center of London.

Each of the Global Ecotechnics projects are run by an on site management team experienced in both business and ecology (or in the case of the London project, leased to those also with experience in art). Global Ecotechnics’ Board of Directors and Officers, who have up to 25 years experience in these fields, continue to do specific work with these projects as well as to consult and advise on improving the projects and attaining the long-term objectives.

 BIRDWOOD DOWNS, PTY Ltd
Australia

Birdwood Downs Station and property is managed by Birdwood Downs Company, Pty., Ltd., with the aim to demonstrate a sustainable program for pasture regeneration. Like many savannah grasslands worldwide, this region faces severe ecological degradation due to human mis-use of the area by overgrazing and over-burning. Over 1000 acres of the station have been planted in birdwood, verano and other semi-drought resistant species of grasses.

Birdwood Downs Company specializes in savannah ecoscapes, Wastewater Gardens®, and is the home of the Kimberley School of Horsemanship where students learn to care for horses and to ride and the improved pastures make for beautiful trail riding and specialized ecotourism retreats.

TROPIC VENTURES
Puerto Rico

The Las Casas de la Selva (the Houses of the Forest) property is operated and managed by Tropic Ventures and Tropic Ventures Educational & Research Foundation (a Puerto Rico non-profit corporation). This area provides a protected habitat for Puerto Rican native flora and fauna as well as a long-term study site for research and limited public and student familiarization in the areas of ecology, botany, forestry, horticulture, soil, ethnobotany and other related environmental disciplines.

Since 1984, on this 1000 acres of land, 40,000 valuable hardwood trees have been line-planted within 230 acres, while maintaining the ecosystem's biomass and biodiversity. In July 2003, 1000 board feet of Mahoe, Hibiscus elatus, was harvested from the Tropic Ventures plantation as its first experimental program to produce a sustainable and economically viable timber crop. As part of Tropic Venture's ongoing sustainable forestry program, more Puerto Rican hardwood trees are being planted at the project. More information.

LES MARRONNIERS
Southern France

Les Marronniers is a model ecological farm that is ecoscaped around an 18th century manor house. The farm is designed to demonstrate the efficacy of a total systems approach to the ecological management of small farms in a region where such facilities are under mounting economic pressure from nearby industrial and urban development. The facility is run seasonally as a conference center, utilizing much of the produce from the farm for its guests.

OCTOBER GALLERY
London, UK

October Gallery (OG), a UK charitable trust, operates Lundonia House in Bloomsbury, London, with the aim to promote artists of the transvangarde – the trans-cultural avant-garde. The objectives of this project are to engage in the education and appreciation of art from cultures around the planet. The gallery also serves as a meeting venue for cultural exchange, seminars, theater, dance and lectures.

GEC also uses the London facility, which is not far from the Royal Society, Linnean Society and other Institutions, for meetings and seminars to advance work on Biospheric Design.

Division: BIOSPHERIC DESIGN

Biospheric Design (BD), a Division of Global Ecotechnics Corporation, has led the development of ecological perspectives in architecture and engineering on acclaimed projects in seven countries and on four continents. Biospheric Design projects incorporate the latest advances in energy efficient and recycling technologies to achieve a harmony between the architecture and the surrounding environment. Biospheric Design unifies the approaches of Frank Lloyd Wright, Bruce Goff, and Buckminster Fuller: “Form follows function” to which Biospheric Design adds, and “function follows form.” With this paradigm, Biospheric Design recognizes the vital importance of material selection, and the practical application of synergy - doing more with less.

BD is now engaged in the design and engineering of the Laboratory Biosphere in the areas of:

  • Modular closed systems
  • Redundant and dual technological systems
  • Structural design
  • Sealing
  • Material selection
  • Airlocks and interlocking mechanism
  • Heat transfer
  • Life support requirements
  • Lighting, heating and cooling requirements
  • Air handling systems
  • Power sources and distribution

Educational Programs

Educational programs in biospherics are important to achieving our goal of developing this newly emerging interdisciplinary field of study. Toward that end, several of our directors give talks and seminars in global ecology, biospherics, and sustainable comprehensive design to schools, universities, institutions and private companies interested in this expanding field.

Publishing

Biospheric information is produced and distributed by Synergetic Press publishing company which has been owned by GEC since 1999. Synergetic Press has over twenty years of experience publishing works on global ecology, ethnobotany, cultures, poetry, drama and art. Working in concert with GEC’s overall aims, the publishing company provides an information vehicle for authors in biospheric, cultural and artistic fields, as well as supplying speakers, facilitating production of educational program materials, and corporate information packages in support of the multi-faceted global objectives of the company.

Film & Photo Archive

In addition to the publishing company, GEC owns a stock-photo and film archive with approximately 50,000 photographs, ecological and cultural images taken from around the world, as well as several completed documentaries on art and ecological themes made available through Dream Distributors. GEC maintains a video editing studio to produce further films and documentaries on biospheric science, and the multi-cultures of humanity.
